(September 9, 2019) Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, MC, activist, philanthropist and acclaimed Hip Hop artist Maimouna Youssef a.k.a. Mumu Fresh is definitely a girl that rocks and fans witnessed her in all her Black Girl Magic as she performed at the 2019 BET Black Girls Rock! Awards that aired on BET last night. Mumu received a standing ovation for her soul-stirring performance of her song “Say My Name” honoring the Mothers of the Movement (M.O.M), which is a group of women whose African American children have been killed by police officers or by gun violence. Seven women from the group include Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner; Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin; Maria Hamilton, mother of Dontre Hamilton; Lucy McBath, mother of Jordan Davis; Lezley McSpadden, mother of Michael Brown, Cleopatra Pendleton-Cowley, mother of Hadiya Pendleton; and Geneva Reed-Veal, mother of Sandra Bland.
“It was an honor for me to perform at the Black Girls Rock! Awards after being a fan of the work Beverly Bond has done to empower young black girls for so long” states Mumu. “Then to be asked to honor the ‘Mothers of the Movement’ was a blessing for me.”
Most recently, Mumu Fresh collaborated with Grammy-Award winning producer DJ Jazzy Jeff’s PLAYLIST Sessions release a single triad (three) that includes the songs “Bitterness,” “Let’s Eat,” and “Chasing Rainbows” for the latest installment of the Chasing Goosebumps series called The Healing. Mumu sings to your heart, however, speaks to your intellect while the words settle in your soul leaving you wanting more. It’s no wonder that her peers like Black Thought, Robert Glasper, Common, and more have all raved about her skills as an MC, singer, and performer.
Executive produced by DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Healing is an introspective look at Mumu Fresh as an artist, activist and most of all a woman. Handpicked by DJ Jazzy Jeff, the project features writers, musicians, and producers that include Grammy-Award winning writer-producer Carvin Haggins (Jill Scott, Ledisi, Tamia), Eric Roberson (Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild,) Kenny Dope, Mac Ayres, Muhsinah, Terry Hunter and more, as well as writing from Mumu herself. Over the next two months, three more triads will be released culminating in the full release of this 12-song masterpiece.
Mumu Fresh also wrapped up touring with rapper/actor Common on his “Let Love Tour,” which made stops in Dallas, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia, DC, Charlotte, Kansas City among others. In addition, Mumu had an event-filled weekend performing in New Orleans celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the ESSENCE Festival. As a multi-talented artist, Mumu has also shared the stage with countless icons including The Roots, Sting, Lala Hathaway, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Ed Sheeran, D’Angelo, Femi Kuti, Zap Mama, Bruno Mars, Nas, and Dave Chappelle among others.
